  6. WHAT IT IS:

  8. PlayOn! is a control panel that lets you play the sound coming in through your Mac’s microphone jack out through the speaker.  This playthrough feature is part of all Macs with built-in sound input, but has been difficult to get at — until now.

  10. HOW TO USE IT:

  12. (NOTE: Playthrough requires System 7 or later)

  14. 1.  Plug your sound source (a CD player, for instance) into the microphone jack on the back of your Mac.  Be sure to use the phono-plug adapter that came with your Mac; otherwise you might damage the delicate circuitry on your Mac’s motherboard.  See the “Getting Started” manual that came with your Mac for details.

  16. 2.  Put PlayOn! in the Control Panels folder in your System Folder.

  18. 3.  Double-click on the PlayOn! icon in the control panels folder.  The PlayOn! control panel will appear.

  29. 4.  Check the “Playthrough On” box to turn playthrough on.  Check the “Run at Startup” box to turn playthrough on every time you start up your Mac.  Use the volume slider to set the playthrough volume.  Click on the words “PlayOn! by John Brewer” to see the shareware message.

  48. KNOWN PROBLEMS:

  50. Because of the way sound is implemented on some low-end Macs, such as the LC, LC II and Classic II, you will not be able to hear any Mac-generated sounds while playthrough is on.  This limitation does not affect any stereo-capable Mac such as the IIsi, PowerBook 170, or Quadra series.

  52. Some games that produce sound in non-standard ways, such as Hellcats over the Pacific will hand or crash if run while playthrough is enabled.  If you run into this problem, just uncheck the “Playthrough On” box in the PlayOn! control panel before using the problem application.
